O.P. Gilson presented the Carroll Post G.A.R. a 100 year old revolutionary war gun. It’s an old fashioned long-barreled rifle of antique pattern. It was originally the property of Abram Elston great-great-grandfather of George A Elston. (Think this is incorrect and it should say great-grandfather)
The gun was passed on to Abram’s son David, and then to his son Abraham (article says he died in 1855 which does not make sense), and then to his son-in-law O.P.Gillson who then presented it to the post. It will be hung in the Carroll Post’s room with other mementoes, relics, and decorations.

In 1855 his wife received 120 more acres. In 1878 when 81 years old and living in Greenville, she was allowed a pension.

According to his grandson George A Elston’s obituary, he was a Captain, born in Orange County, New York, and was a farmer. He was active in the Greenville Baptist Church and assisted in the organization of the First Baptist Church in Port Jervis. Though his home was 7 miles east he often walked the distance when well along in years. He won his title of Captain in the militia service. His old Queen Anne musket was in the possession of his grandson George A Elston, when George died. His last years were spent in Unionville, New York. Says he died at the age of 77, so not sure if the birth and death dates are correct.
David married Lydia Jane SCHOONOVER, daughter of Samuel SCHOONOVER and Phebe COLE, in Feb 1821. Lydia was born on Jun 12, 1800 in South Centerville, New York and died on Feb 27, 1886 at age 85.

He later moved his business to the Lockwood building uptown going into business with Coe Green.
The partnership dissolved in 1877 after which time he was with several firms in Middletown, including Churchill and Co, and George E Winters, both dry-goods businesses.
He moved back to Port Jervis in January 1887 after he became ill.
He was a member of Excelsior Council No 102 of A.L. of H.
His son George’s obituary says he was a native of Greenville, New York, but his own obituary says he was born in Minisink.
He was a Democrat, but after 1872 he affiliated with the Republican Party
George married Deborah Jane HAWKINS, daughter of Eliah HAWKINS, on May 15, 1850. Deborah was born in Mt. Hope, Orange, New York and died on Dec 17, 1888.
