General Notes: According to the Genealogy of the Cowles Families in America book he came from Gloucestershire, England 1634. He settled first in Farmington, CT and moved to Hartford, CT in 1656. He then moved to Hadley, MA/Hatfield, MA in the summer of 1664. He was one of the founding members of the town of Hatfield, MA.
According to the book The Early Geneologies of the Cole Families in America he was in Farmington, CT in 1652. About 1664 he removed to Hatfield where he was admitted freeman in 1666, and died in 1675.

3. Samuel COWLES was born in 1639 in Hartford, Connecticut, USA (this doesn’t seem to be correct since his siblings were all born in Farmington and his family didn’t move to Hartford until 1656) and died on Apr 17, 1691 in Farmington, Connecticut at age 52.
General Notes: According to the Genealogy of the Cowles Families in America book he most likely went with his parents to Hartford in 1656 and was probably married there at the home of Abigail’s parents, although their marriage is recorded in the Farmington Land Records. Soon after his marriage he probably returned to Farmington, CT to his father’s old homestead, which he inherited in 1671 by a deed of gift which probably included all of his father’s land in Farmington which was 107 acres in 1666 and were recorded in 1678 as belonging to Samuel Cowles son of John Cowles deceased. He was one of 84 proprietors in 1672, a large landowner, a man of energy and enterprise, and a leading citizen of the town. He was granted by the town of Farmington, on Jan 18, 1670, 19 acres of land in the Great Swamp (Berlin) lying on the Mattebesit River. (See Cowles Book for more)

Third Generation
18. Samuel COWLES was born on Mar 17, 1662 in Farmington, Connecticut and died on Oct 14, 1748 in Kensington, Connecticut at age 86.
General Notes: According to the Genealogy of the Cowles Families in America book he inherited part of his father’s home lot known as Pitkin place, and later on the Dr. Carrington place, which he gave to his son Thomas. He moved to Kensington in the town of Farmington, CT before 1716. It may have been much earlier as he and his brothers Isaac and Caleb signed a petition on Oct 11, 1705 for authority for the settlement of an Ecclesiastical Society at a place called the “Great Swamp”. (See Cowles Book for more info)
He was appointed townsman of Farmington in May 1702 by the General Assembly of Connecticut for one year. “He was a man of small size, rather spare, eyes brown, hair of light cast, legs small and trim; with a turn peculiar to the Cowles family, reserved in conversation, steady in mind, and of a mild disposition, and not easily provoked to a passion.
According to the Early Geneologies of the Cole Families in America book he and his wife joined the Farmington Church on May 25, 1690.
He and his mother were named as executors of his father’s will dated Farmington, CT, April 15, 1691, which provided that in addition to land already given to him, he should have a double portion of all of his father’s real estate.
Samuel married Rachel PORTER, daughter of Thomas PORTER and Sarah HART, on May 12, 1685 in Farmington, Connecticut. Rachel was born in Dec 1658 and died on Oct 4, 1743 in Kensington, Connecticut at age 84.

General Notes: According to the Genealogy of the Cowles Families in America book he and his wife were church members in 1756 in Kensington, Berlin, Connecticut. They moved to Durham, New York about 1789. He was listed as being from Berlin on a deed in Jan 12, 1789 and was in Durham., New York on the US Census of 1790. It is possible that he was the same person as Lieut. John Cole of Capt. Selah Hart’s company, Col. Walcott’s Conn. Regiment at Boston 1776. He was also called Captain Cole. He and Capt. Hart were brothers-in-law, but Lieut. Cole may have been a brother or relation of one of Capt. Hart’s wives, both of whose maiden names were Cole.

General Notes: According to the Genealogy of the Cowles Families in America book he lived in Kennsington, Connecticut until he moved to Durham, New York on May 1, 1784 to build a home for his family in the wilderness. He served in the Revolutionary War. He was the first English settler in the wilderness and one of the founders of the church there.

In 1855 he was elected president of the Agricultural Insurance Company of Watertown and worked there until his death.
He was for several years the supervisor of the town of Adams.
He was among the promoters of the Thousand Island Park in the St. Lawrence River having a cottage there.
